Let me start this review by letting you know that I love fanny packs. They are the most comfortable way for me to carry things on my bike. I have yet to find a bar bag that I love so I use fanny packs to hold the things I want to keep easily accessible. I had been keeping an eye out for a waterproof bag before I went to Scandinavia. I knew that I needed to keep my phone, passport, wallet, etc in a bag that was waterproof but the only bags that I could find were extremely bulky bags designed for stand up paddle boarding where the wearer is intended to be in an upright position. A few weeks before I left for Norway Showers Pass released a waterproof fanny pack, the Rainslinger Waterproof Hip Pack. I use their rain gear and trust it to keep me dry so I figured I’d try out the new bag. This bag was exactly what I was looking for.
This bag is waterproof. I rode in cold hard rain for a week in Norway and through plenty of other days that were rainy but seemed downright pleasant after hard freezing rain. I kept my phone, wallet, passport, kindle, and postcards in this bag and not a single drop of rain got inside. This was the primary reason I bought this fanny pack and it held up to the elements.
The Rainslinger is comfortable. There is a padded section there your back meets the bag to prevent any discomfort. The hip straps are easy to adjust and a second set of straps allows the user to adjust the tilt of the bag. This is a roomy bag so sometimes you can feel the bag tilt away from you if there it is too top heavy. This adjustment is easy to make and means that you don’t have to repack the bag just to get it to sit on your back comfortably.
There is enough space to fit all your daily essentials in here. The specs indicate that it has a 3.5L capacity. I have comfortably carried two burritos, wallet, phone, gloves, and sunscreen in here. On this trip I carried my sunglasses, kindle, wallet, passport, phone, postcards, gloves, phone charger with a large adapter on it, sunscreen, knife, spork, toilet paper, and anything I may have picked up that day and wanted to be able to access easily, like candy. It was easy to find things and it was never completely stuffed.
The bag has some safety features that I haven’t used but I think are thoughtful additions by the designers. There is reflective thread woven into the straps and a red flashing light is built into the outside of the bag. It is removable so that you can swap out batteries but it is incredibly convenient. As someone who frequently forgets to bring her lights with her, I love that this built in light means I will never forget my rear light again while camping.
In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I love this bag and recommend it without hesitation. If you are interested in picking on up, you can save 10% of your total Showers Pass purchase with this link. Their rain gear has kept me dry in the Norwegian rain, eastern US thunderstorms, and Bay Area fog.
